Predator and Prey
Enjoying both the original book and the film adaption, I was delighted to make my own cover for Where the Crawdads Sing. The novel's main character Kaya, is abandoned by her family and has to raise herself in the swamps of North Carolina. She becomes known as the "marsh girl" and ostracized by those in the nearby town. She is hunted down and accused of murder after one of the townsfolk dies to face justice. I chose to depict these themes by showing one of the more dangerous characters. Chase Andrews, in murky silhouette form, searching the swamp for Kaya as she blends into the environment where she was raised, The composition also makes the viewer question who is being hunted. This reflects the predator/prey relationship the book deals with. To reinforce this further, I also included an alligator following the boat, barely peeking above the surface of the water. The main title on the cover also blends in with the environment and exhibits a wildness that fits the themes.
